Mama Monday – Parenting Under the Weather

It happens about once every “winter” season. Somehow, someway, a cold or flu makes its way into my house.  Last year, it was the flu, and my beautiful daughter was the culprit.  She picked it up at daycare, and whether its because she got her flu shot, or because she’s SuperBaby, she beat it after only a couple days of crankiness and sniffles. But my husband and I got it BAD. Three weeks bad. So bad we had to send that kiddo to the in-laws for a few days because we were too sick to even move bad.  And that almost happened, AGAIN this past week.

This time it was a doozy of a cold– and it hit me and my husband at pretty much the same time. The little lady was unaffected (thank goodness). But the experience reminded me of how difficult parenting and enforcing “the rules” can be when you’re not feeling 100%.

A week of quick and easy meals and allowing our little one to watch TV on weekdays led to a meltdown today when we returned to “normal”– which consists of lots of veggies and no TV (except for weekends). What’s crazy though, is she wasn’t even watching that much TV, and it was only for that one week, but apparently it was enough for her to fully expect to watch an episode of Mickey Mouse upon arrival from daycare, and her shouts of “I WANT MICKEY!!!!!!!” while sprawled out on the floor, complete with stomping feet and rivers of tears were enough to make me want to cry right along with her.

It really is amazing how such a short period of time can influence a child’s perception and expectations, which makes me stress even more about whether I’m getting it right. Is there damage done when you coast for a week on the rules, for whatever reason (in this case, being under the weather?) I know that it’s unrealistic for parents to be 100% on their game, 100% consistent, 100% of the time, but what’s the right mix to strive for?

Fashion Friday – Winter, Family-style

As a former east coaster, I have LOTS of experience with cold. And the way that I used to combat the cold was to bundle up with a hoodie, a  water-proof, wind-proof ski coat over that, gloves, a hat, a scarf wrapped all the way up to my eyes sometimes and big snow boots. And all of those items didn’t necessary match either. Not exactly a fashion statement, right?

Well leave it to Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady to manage to do cold-weather in style. Check out this fashion-forward family out and about in the cold Boston Winter. Gorgeous coat and scarf? Check. Matching sunglasses and boots? Check. Super cute baby decked our in adorable winter sweater? Check Check. Perfect Winter style in my book!

Toddler Time – Bye bye crib

Over the past weekend, we transitioned our little one from her crib to a toddler bed. She’s slept on a toddler bed at her daycare for at least a few months now, but we’ve kept her in her crib at home because she seemed comfortable there (and I’m of the mind that if its not broken you don’t fix it).

She recently completed potty training though, and we decided we want her to have the freedom to get up to use the potty as she chooses. So- off to the store we went to purchase a little toddler bed.

As I sat there watching my husband put the bed together as our little one took her last nap in her crib, I cried. (It really doesn’t take much.) I can’t believe my little baby is turning into a big kid! Almost all of the remnants of her babyhood are disappearing… her diapers, her crib, even her high chair (we also moved to a booster seat at the table with Mommy and Daddy this weekend!) Now that she’s potty-trained, we can’t even use onesies, so those are out too.

It’s sad to see all of the remnants of such an amazing time in her and my life pass by, but I’m so excited for everything that’s new and replacing those things. Her big kid bed means easier bed time stories and tuck-in’s and dinner at the table with Mommy and Daddy means more chatter. I can’t wait to see what else the toddler years will bring!

What’s for dinner Wednesday – The “New” Sloppy Joe

My little girl LOVES sandwiches. It actually works out very well, considering her mom and dad are constantly on-the-go, but sometimes, even a kid who loves sandwiches can grow weary of the standard PB&J or Grilled Cheese. I recently picked up an AMAZING little cookbook that I wish I had found earlier, called The Petit Appetit.

I wish I had found it earlier because it lays out delicious, organic recipes by age and stage, from beginners (4-6 months) to explorers (6-9 months), the independents (9-12 months), the movers (12-24 months), the shakers (2-3 years) and the connoisseurs (3-4 years).

My little “shaker” loves the “Sloppy Janes” — The Petit Appetit’s organic version of the Sloppy Joe. Yellow onion, green bell pepper, mushrooms, organic ground beef, tangy barbecue sauce and herbs and spices turn into a fun, messy and delicious dinner. (Nothing that our Quib can’t handle!) These sandwiches literally take 20 minutes to prepare– and for me to say something is quick and easy is REALLY saying something!
