Earth Day with Littles

Earth Day. The day the whole world supports environmental protection and we all vow to never again brush our teeth with the water running and think about maybe starting that compost pile. It can be hard to go green – half the time we don’t know how we are contributing to the ecological footprint and for the other half we don’t know how to change it.

We put together a few tips to enjoy with your children, to hopefully make it a little easier and maybe even a little fun!

  1. Walk or bike to school
Just leaving the car at home for one day can have a big impact on both the planet and your health. Kids tend to open up more on a walk, so the conversation flows easier than it does in the car with the radio on. Here are some tips for talking with your toddler.
  1. Plant a small vegetable garden
Little girl in clover fieldWatching something grow that you planted yourself, is one of life’s simplest pleasures. The sense of accomplishment and pride also means little ones might even eat what they planted.
  1. Get rid of the plastic sandwich bags
Wean Green makes these awesome glass containers in all sorts of sizes and colors. We switched our sandwich bags out a long ago and now our little ones take a sort of bento box with them to school, filled with small tastes of different foods. Check out Weelicious when in need of ideas for kid-friendly lunches.
  1. Reusable Bags

Our very own Wet & Dry Bags are one of the easiest ways to go green. Available in petit and grand sizes, they can be used for all manner of things such as a toy bag on-the-go (coloring book and crayons, read-along books, or filled with those tiny Shopkins that are so easy to lose), packing for travel (great for underwear, shoes or swimsuits) and even as a liner for this cute Cult Gaia bag.
  1. Recycle!
You know that old comment about how kids get more fun out of cardboard box, than the toy that was inside it? Well, it’s true! With more and more people shopping online, those boxes are a-plenty and kids just love them! This is a great article with ideas on what to do with those boxes. Imaginations will go wild and the iPad will be forgotten…at least for a couple of hours.

Snuggle Blanket:
Researchers recently found that women need to be hugged once a day for their health! I’m sure this is true for most of us, so when you can’t physically be there, the next best thing is our Snuggle Blanket – so soft and cozy, it feels like a real-life hug.
Alternative uses: great for trips – bringing something familiar from home to sleep with can help to settle a restless little one.

 Hooded Towel:
Pair one of our fun hooded towels with a rubber duckie and you will have just about the best gift for your little valentine! Bath times will be more fun, little heads will be warm and little bodies will be swaddled in a plush, water-wicking wonder!
Alternative uses: Perfect for the pool and great as a cape while running through the sprinklers!

Nursing Cover:

What says ‘I love you’ more than breastfeeding? Nothing. So treat yourself to our pioneering product, the nursing cover. Multiple feedings, all day long, in perfect, serene privacy. No matter where you are or who you are with (hello, father-in-law!) baby can concentrate on feeding and you can gaze at your little darling, while marveling at what a great job you are both doing.
Alternative uses: Excuses: “I’m sorry, I can’t help with those dishes – I’m nursing”, we won’t tell. Seriously; wear over a baby carrier to protect from sun or wind.

Car Seat Cover:

Designed to stay-put, to protect baby from wind, rain and over-zealous visitors. The cover will not blow in baby’s face waking them from their much needed nap – a gift in itself!
Alternative uses: a full length zipper allows the cover to open completely and snaps at the back secure the cover open when baby is awake.
