Fashion Friday – The Evolution of Maternity Style

We’ve come a long way, baby. From maternity gowns, to the days of the A-line maternity shirt, to today’s bump-hugging sophisticated styles, maternity wear has evolved from fashion to hide your growing belly, to fashion designed to show it off.

Even before I was pregnant (way back in 2009), I was envious of the cute maternity clothes in the windows of maternity stores. So, I was super excited when I finally got my chance to embrace my Mommy-style. At the time of my pregnancy, trendy little dresses were in- with crisscrossed v-neck necklines and ties around the waist to accentuate a growing Mommy’s curves. I also rocked the basic t-shirt and jeans look quite frequently- something that usually looks pretty standard to me, but maternity designers somehow made it look hip. I was so sad when I no longer needed my maternity clothes, and had to pack them away.

Trendy Maternity DressFast forward only 2 years later, and already maternity fashion has changed. Again, I’m envious of the trendy dresses that I see on the Mommies-to-be around town. It looks like “chic” is in now, whereas the trend was more casual during “my time”. Makes me think that when we’re ready for baby #2, the box of maternity clothes that I have in our attic will be too behind the times. I guess I’ll just have to go on another maternity shopping spree some day. I mean, come on- it’s not going to take a lot of arm twisting. And #1 on my list will be this adorable stripey maternity dress from Destination Maternity. That is, if the trends don’t change again by then.

Fashion Friday – Dressing Your Bump for Holiday Parties

Linda Caredllini Black Dress Baby BumpI really do believe there’s nothing more beautiful than an expectant mom. That’s just as true when she’s wearing comfy, casual and cute maternity fashions as when she’s glamming it up. For this Fashion Friday- we want to know how you’re dressing your baby bump this holiday season. Are you keeping it casual or going all out?

Personally, I kept it casual most of the time while I was in my last trimester.  Since I was due in November, I didn’t have any holiday parties to attend while pregnant. The little black dress I saw Linda Cardellini wear last week made me wish I had though! What a perfect way to show off her baby bump- check out the article on people.com.

So ladies- what are your go-to holiday outfits going to be?

Traveling Tuesday: Early Inheritance

We are “traveling” back in time today…!

Now that I carry my SLR around me most everywhere I go, my shoulder bags and totes just aren’t cutting it any more. It’s literally a pain in the neck to keep it from sliding off my shoulder while trying to capture THE shot that requires the use of both hands. Thus, I decided a crossbody bag would better serve my purposes of shlepping my possessions around with me — a tan leather crossbody bag to be precise. While I really like this bag, tan leather will better round out my modest handbag collection and I like that it’s a timeless look that spans seasons as well as decades. Proof? I was admiring these at the Coach website

when I recalled that my mom carried something similar around at one time. I rang her up and hey, not only did she have a tan leather bag, she had THE ORIGINAL Original Rambler’s Legacy bag by Coach! In tan! See it up there in the top row? The best part was that she was thrilled to give it to me because it’d been neglected in the back of her closet for the past 20 years. It’d been a gift from my grandma to my mom 40-something years ago and now my mom was handing it down to me. :D

**Okay, I lied. The best part wasn’t that she was thrilled to pass it along to me and it was mine (for free!) just a week later. The best part is when it arrived… You know how they say scent is a powerful way to trigger memories? After being tucked away in her closet for years, the bag smells just how I remember my mom smelling from my childhood in a really lovely way. It particularly reminds me of all her hugs because I’d literally be enveloped in that scent, in her arms, feeling safe and loved. And that makes me happy to carry this bag around with me wherever I go now :)

New Year – Same Old Resolution

Again this year, I made the New Years resolution to be more organized. I was feeling as though I’d already failed miserably in so many ways, however today as I was sitting in the orthodontists office waiting for my daughter, I picked up the magazine Redbook. This is a magazine that I never read (which is amazing since my magazine pile is around 3 feet tall right now and it feels as though I subscribe to every magazine there is – another New Years Resolution waiting to be conquered!). Anyway, this article peaked my interest.
The best part? I do nearly all of these things already. For example: I just installed a cute basket at the bottom of the stairs which is meant to capture all the things that need to go upstairs (tip 22). Last year I whipped up this jewelry organizer (tip 18)

Jewelry Organizer in Nest

And our old TV armoire that I love, was rendered useless since the invention of the giant flat screen – I repurposed it as our ‘mid-range fancy china’ cabinet a couple of years ago (tip 24) Seriously, I could have written this article!

So, I have concluded that I might not be as disorganized as I thought and maybe I can now tackle another project as a New Years resolution…Now, should it be that magazine habit or the 9 years and GB’s of digital photos? – gulp.

How are you doing with your resolutions?
