Oscar Party?

Have you ever been to one or hosted one? I was invited to one by a friend last year but was in that awful, first trimester, so tired and nauseous that I could hardly get through the day. The thought of trying to get dressed fancy and go to a party was too much! BUT, I really wished that I had gone and it sounded like an amazing party! She even did the red carpet leading up to her entry with “paparazzi” to take your picture while you struck a pose.

Since the Oscars are coming up this Sunday, February 27th (8/5P) on ABC, I thought it would be fun to brainstorm about throwing your own Oscar party!

First, have you seen all the movies that are up for a nomination? You can go here to get the complete list. And see how many of the movies you can see between now and Sunday – ready, go!

Now, we just need to figure out decorations, drinks, food and any additional entertainment!

Decorations: I talked about the “red carpet”, which you can use a plastic red tablecloth and then maybe some gold stars along the “carpet” or hanging from above.  If you have a friend to photograph that will definitely set the mood.

The Oscars website has a great resource from what to serve to how to engage your party goers, think that the Oscar ballots are a must!

Movie-themed foods:
Black Swan: to be a touch ironic – Marble Cake
Inception: Three Kings Cake – your choice of what to “hide inside”
The King’s Speech: Bangers & Mash
The Social Network: Mini-pizzas
Winter’s Bone: Squirrel “chicken” wings

Here is a great resource for all things Oscar party!

Travel Tuesday – Let them watch or not?

So, we just got a new car this weekend – super exciting! There are so many features and gadgets, I feel like I am sitting at a cockpit in the driver’s seat. They even had a guy there just to give us an overview of the different features in the car – after haggling with the sales guys for three plus hours with both girls in tow; we got the extremely condensed version. I am going to have to find time to read the thick manual or one of the four manuals at least.

One of the features that came with it was a DVD player for the back seat. My husband and I have been debating for the last two days if we are going to let the 3 year old watch movies on it or wait until we go on a longer road trip. I really don’t want to hear her asking to watch a movie EVERYTIME we get in the car, nor do I think it is good for her to get used to it. My husband suggested that we just get educational/learning videos for the car and that she can watch those. At this point, I feel like telling her that it doesn’t work and then it miraculously is fixed when we take a road trip this spring/summer. Does that make me a bad mom?

I would love to hear from other moms what you have done in this kind of situation and if you let them watch or not?

Mama Monday’s….Makeup Tip!

Good Morning Mama’s!

I didn’t really wear makeup until I was in my mid-20’s. I first tried it out in junior high; my mom found out and banned it. But of course, being the rebellious tween (I shudder to think of the payback I am going to get with my two daughters – at least I have ten years) for about a month I snuck over to a girlfriends house in the morning before school to put on that terrible, pink lipstick with blue mascara….anyone else remember that look?

In my 20’s, I went through a heavy black eyeliner and red lipstick (which I still seem to fall back on every now and then) and now I pretty much have a daily routine. Please let me just say that I am not saying that anyone needs to wear makeup! However, if you are someone that enjoys applying makeup and/or wearing it then here is your tip!

Have I mentioned that I have a three year old and five month old and haven’t slept in oh, three to four years? Add to the fact that I have Italian blood and the beautiful (yes that is sarcasm) raccoon eyes that come with that ethnicity. For those reasons, I have been on the hunt for a good under eye concealer and boy oh boy did I find one!

I am not here to promote any brand over another so I am not going to mention the specific brand…if you really want to know leave me a comment with your email address and I will ping you directly. BUT, I do want to share that if you can find a good under eye concealer, it makes all the difference between being a disheveled, tired looking mama and a bright eyed and bushy tailed mama…personally, I prefer for people to see me and not that I am just another tired mama.

And, a very Happy Valentine’s Day to you and your lovies!

What’s for dinner Wednesday…Why I love Trader Joe’s

How is it that every night I am surprised by the fact that the day has gone by and it is almost dinner time and I haven’t thought about what I am going to make – does this ever happen to you?

For me, those are the nights that I look into my fridge and sing the praise of Trader Joe’s. How I love this store and all the simple, quick and mostly healthy dinners that feed my family. Not only can I breeze through the aisles and pick up one or two or ten items that will happily feed all the members of my family but also on a budget we can afford!

Turns out, last night was a Trader Joe’s signing night! I looked up and realized it was 5:15 pm and whoops, no dinner in sight! What me worried? Nope, not with my trusty Trader Joe ingredients. I pull out from the freezer, Trader Joe’s Turkey Meatballs (have you ever tried these, not bad at all, not like an Italian Grandmother’s but delish in my opinion). Throw those in the pot with some pasta sauce (we always have red sauce in the pantry); it only takes about 20 minutes. I had picked up some Trader Joe’s Brown Rice Spaghetti Pasta (just to try it out – very good, texture is more like rice than pasta and the three year old loves it). Threw together a quick green salad together, yes, that would be another one of those take the lettuce mix from the box and place on the plate, add veggies if you have them. Final piece, Trader Joe’s now has French Baguettes; they are in the freezer section and perfect to for nights like this.

We were all so hungry last night that I forgot to take a picture, but if you visit a Trader Joe’s near you or pop on their website, they offer all kinds of meal suggestions.

Happy Eating!
