Have you ever tried yoga? I know it’s not for everyone. I have been going to classes off and on for the past (not sure I want to say this number out loud) actually, I will cheat and say since I was 18. Anyway, every time I go to a class I leave feeling like I have rejuvenated my mind, body and soul and can take on whatever I have coming to me next. This feeling lasts until I walk in the door of my house….but oh, those 15 minutes are wonderful!

Yesterday, we hosted a Superbowl party at our house. One of my girlfriends suggested we hit up a yoga class that we occasionally go to before the party. It was a great idea, and hour and a half of yoga before my house is filled with children and beer drinking daddies sounded like just what was needed.

There is a beautiful yoga studio just 5 minutes from my house. It is a converted church, so it has gorgeous stain glass windows and a chapel and just feels like you are reconnecting with yourself. It was a great class; it’s for beginners so it’s lots of low impact stretching, which is perfect for me….almost 5 months postpartum, I am still not up for anything strenuous yet.

My favorite part of the class is the relaxation part at the end. When else in your daily life do you take five minutes (doesn’t seem like a lot but it does the trick), to lie on the floor with your eyes closed, covered in a blanket and just do nothing? Try doing this at home and the three year old thinks it is time to take mama out and the baby cries…you know the routine. I am still working on actually relaxing during this time and not running through my mental checklist but I am getting better.

As I was leaving the class, I thanked my friend for getting me there before the big day. I felt relaxed and ready to have a house full of people. I felt connected to myself and that I could move through the day feeling just a bit lighter….that is until I helped myself to the chicken wings the boys had cooking at home!

    After my wedding, I starting taking Yoga classes with my wife to try to unwind little by little. I was skeptical to say the least, I just didn’t picture a guy like myself taking Yoga classes, but I decided to give it a shot.

    I couldn’t have been more wrong, I was instantly hooked! Yoga quickly became a part of my week and something that I looked forward to. Soon I was able to see the effects of Yoga in my everyday life, and not just in the sense of relaxation. For instance I have always considered myself a klutz, but after taking some time to be aware of my body and surroundings I am less likely to stub my toe or bump my head.

    I would recommend Yoga to anybody who asked me, regardless of age, gender or physique. There are so many different kinds of Yoga that you are bound to find something that works for you and improves your well being.
